Description
Since August 2026, the EU AI Act (Article 50) requires AI-generated and AI-manipulated images to be disclosed. Stampwise helps you find those images in your Media Library and label them clearly — and take the label off again if you change your mind.
Find AI-generated images
Stampwise checks new uploads for the signals AI tools leave behind and flags them in the Media Library:
- C2PA content credentials and IPTC “digital source type” metadata (used by Adobe Firefly, OpenAI, Google and others)
- Generation parameters written by Stable Diffusion (AUTOMATIC1111 / Forge), ComfyUI, InvokeAI and NovelAI
- Generator names in EXIF / XMP (Midjourney, DALL·E, Imagen / Gemini, Firefly, FLUX, Ideogram, Leonardo.Ai, Microsoft Designer, Meta AI and more)
- Default file names used by ChatGPT, Gemini, DALL·E, Midjourney, Firefly and others
Flagged images get an “AI detected” badge, and one click on AI-generated above the Media Library shows them all. To check images you already have, select them in the list view and choose Check for AI-generated images.
Detection is a helpful signal, not proof: images that were screenshotted, re-saved or stripped of metadata can’t always be recognised, so keep labelling anything you know is AI-generated.
Label them
Add a clean, readable “AI-generated” badge to any image — one at a time or in bulk. Choose the text (any language), corner and size. Labels are drawn onto every image size, so they stay visible wherever the image is shown, and they can be removed in one click.
Watermark the rest
Stampwise is also a complete watermark plugin:
- Text or logo watermarks, in any of 9 positions or as a tiled, rotated pattern
- JPEG, PNG (with transparency), WebP, AVIF and GIF
- Undo anytime. Originals are kept in a private folder; removing a watermark restores the exact original file
- Never stacks. Re-applying starts from the original, and regenerating thumbnails is safe
- Live preview of your unsaved settings on any image from your library
- Automatic on upload, bulk actions, and buttons on every image

Privacy
Stampwise processes images on your own server and never sends your images anywhere. Upgrades and licensing are handled by Freemius: the plugin only shares basic site data (URL, versions) if you opt in on first use or activate a license. See the Freemius privacy policy.

Installation
- Install and activate Stampwise from Plugins Add New.
- Go to Media Stampwise. AI detection is on by default for new uploads; set your label text and position, and (optionally) your watermark.
- In Media Library (list view), select images and use the bulk actions to check them for AI, add labels or add watermarks.

Does this make my site EU AI Act compliant?

It helps you disclose AI-generated images clearly and consistently, which is what the transparency rules ask for. It is not legal advice; check what applies to your use case.

How reliable is the AI detection?

Very reliable when the image still carries the metadata AI tools write (C2PA, IPTC, generation parameters). Images that were screenshotted or had their metadata stripped may not be recognised. Nothing is ever labeled without your say-so in the free version.

Can I remove a label or watermark later?

Yes. Stampwise keeps the original of every file it changes. Removing a label or watermark (per image, in bulk, or with WP-CLI) puts the original back byte for byte.

Will watermarks stack if I apply them twice or regenerate thumbnails?

No. Applying again always starts from the original, and when WordPress regenerates thumbnails Stampwise restores the originals first and re-applies afterwards.

Which image formats are supported?

JPEG, PNG (with transparency), WebP, AVIF and static GIF — whatever your server’s GD library can read and write. Animated GIF and WebP files are skipped so their animation is not lost. The settings page lists the formats available on your server.

I labeled old images but the site still shows the old version.

Your browser, caching plugin or CDN is serving a cached copy. Purge the cache and it will update.

Where are the originals stored?

In a folder named
stampwise-originals-followed by a random string inside your uploads directory. It contains an index file and an.htaccessdeny rule. Deleting an image also deletes its backup. -
What happens if I uninstall the plugin?

Your settings are removed, but labeled / watermarked images and their backups are kept so you do not lose anything. To restore every original first, remove labels and watermarks in bulk or run
wp stampwise reset --all.
